From Scribe to Natural Philosopher Rather than weighing the virtue of various possible definitions of science, the authors examine the successive modes of interrogating nature that have emerged over the past five-thousand years. At the crux of their inquiry, we find the bearers of knowledge, those players who produced, preserved and disseminated knowledge, with a particular emphasis on their integration into the social structure and institutions of their times.
