They were thirty-nine to set foot on the Island of Ayiti (Hispaniola) after the sinking of the Santa-Maria. Thirty-nine men of all ages who accepted to wait on the island for a new ship from Spain to arrive the following year. One of the crew was a cabin-boy named Jorge Gonzalez.  It is through his “testimony” and that of his new friend from the Taino tribe, Baguanamey, who is also thirteen years old, that we will learn all that went on during that year. The mutiny, the fighting with the Natives, the lust for gold. How many of these men will be alive at year’s end?
