Every Thursday afternoon, Annie Brière's sister, having just spent the afternoon with her lover, stops by Annie's apartment to take a shower. And Léonie already has a serious relationship, thinks Annie. Commitment. What does the word really mean ?
Bernard Samson, Annie's creative writing prof, when married kept a mistress for more than ten years. And how does Annie know? His books are full of his infidelities. (Ah, writers ! and their dreadful habit of revealing the sordid details of their lives in print !)
For Annie Brière however, the question of commitment remains largely theoretical until she meets Laurent Viau, a proof reader at Duffroy Editions where she has just published her first novel. Quite clearly, Laurent Viau is attracted to Annie and they soon become romantically involved. After a night of passion while listening to Jay-Jay Johansen and Leonard Cohen, Annie discovers that just because Laurent doesn't wear a ring on his left hand doesn't mean he's what you might call single. Suddenly, with a certain sense of urgency, she is forced to examine the idea of commitment and it's moral implications. And there's that second novel that both her prof and her editor are impatiently waiting for… A delicious parody of autobiographical fiction, Scrapbook is irresistibly funny. Rarely in Quebec literature have the affairs of the heart, couples and their confusion been dealt with in such a comic and subtly satirical manner.

Don't be fooled though, Nadine Bismuth continues to treat grave themes such as infidelity, deceit and betrayal. Through the many and varied intrigues which she skilfully and craftily unveils, she poses an essential literary question : How do we tell fact from fiction when dealing with the people we love or even our own feelings?
